Memorial Garden

Remember

Although this spot is on the very edge of campus, it is full of variegated wildlife and is captivating in all seasons.

Observed Species

Winter berry, hosta, indian grass, bur oak, robin, bloody cranesbill, Japanese maple

The memorial sit spot to me is one of the best places at North Park University. I saw the memorial garden transition during the fall, observing the leaves begin to fall on the ground and change colors from green to a bright orange. The wind blowing the leaves off the tree added the cherry on top for the feeling of fall.

One of the practices I do when I go to my sit spot is put my headphones on and listen to my music, usually R&B, something slow and calming. When I get there, I sit on the bench. I put my backpack beside me and just continue to listen to my music and let my mind relax as I watch the birds sit on the branches. The squirrels in the distance look at me like I am going to hurt them, but they don’t know I am scared of them.

When you have a sit spot, it requires you to be peaceful and quiet, somewhere you don’t have to worry about the things that can be stressful in life. I go to my sit-spot when I need a space where I just sit in my thoughts to get a moment of silence.

Going to the garden for several weeks and seeing the people pass by, the bugs disappear due to the colder weather. I like seeing the plants change colors and go through the circle of life.
